Summer planting for street

Residents join in.

The terraces in Alfred Street are made up mainly of small workers’ dwellings built in the late 19th century. The front doors open directly onto the street, so in 2009 the Friends asked the residents if they would like a wall planter for each house front to brighten up the street scene. Two thirds of them said yes, so we bought some small conical planters and filled them with lobelia, begonias, petunias and busy lizzies. On delivery day our team, with the help of some of the residents, fixed the colourful planters to the walls by the front doors. Most people kept theirs well-watered and we were pleased to see that many had replanted theirs for summer 2010, 2011 and 2012!
